The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is committed to protecting the personal and tax information of Canadians. As of February 7, 2022, the CRA will require that My Account users have an email address on file to help protect their online accounts from fraudulent activity.

Having an email address on file will ensure you promptly receive important information from the CRA, including an email notification when account information such as your mailing address or direct deposit, has changed. These email notifications can act as an early warning for potential fraudulent activity, or as a confirmation that your information has been successfully changed.

If you don’t have an email address on file

As of February 7, 2022, all users will be required to have an email address on file in order to continue using My Account. If you do not currently have one on file in My Account, you will be prompted to enter one when you sign in. If you do not currently have an email address, there are a variety of free email options available to everyone.

To add an email address to your online account now, simply sign in to My Account and select “Personal profile”.

Receiving CRA mail and email notifications

This new security feature will not affect your preferred method of receiving CRA mail. You will have the option to receive it by paper, or to receive an email notification when you have new mail to view in My Account.

While some email notifications will be mandatory to ensure the security of your account, such as when your address or direct deposit information is changed, you will be able to choose to receive additional optional notifications.

While we highly recommend My Business Account users be signed up for email notifications, it is not required at this time.

We thank you for your patience and cooperation as we implement this necessary security measure. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions.
